When Waiting Is Part of the Calling

The quiet years matter

Some stories seem to begin at the moment everything changes: the sea parts, the enemy falls, the leader steps forward. Moses's story begins much earlier, in a basket hidden among the reeds. Then it stretches across decades before the familiar fire appears on the mountain.

That long beginning matters. Moses spends his early years surrounded by danger and divine protection. He grows up with access to the royal world, yet he carries the identity of a Hebrew. He learns the language, customs, and authority of Egypt while remaining connected to a people living under oppression. The palace gives him one kind of education, but it cannot answer the deepest questions of his life.

Failure is not the final chapter

Moses's attempt to defend a Hebrew laborer ends in violence, fear, and flight. The prince becomes a fugitive. To an outside observer, his future appears to have collapsed. His old position is gone, and the life ahead seems reduced to the routine of caring for sheep in Midian.

Yet the desert is not empty time. It is a place where Moses learns patience, attentiveness, endurance, and responsibility. Shepherding requires noticing what is vulnerable, staying with the flock, and moving at a pace determined by the needs of others. Those lessons will become essential when Moses is eventually asked to lead an entire people through uncertainty.

The call begins with God

At the burning bush, Moses does not present a polished résumé. He asks questions. He hesitates. He names his limitations. The encounter is powerful partly because it makes clear that the mission does not depend on Moses's confidence or perfection. God is the one who speaks, sends, and promises to be present.

The revelation of “I AM WHO I AM” shifts the center of the story. Moses is not being asked to manufacture deliverance through personal strength. He is being invited to trust the God who has seen, heard, remembered, and come down to rescue.

For readers today, Moses offers a needed correction to our impatience. A hidden season may still be a formative season. A painful detour may teach a responsibility that public success never could. And when the call finally comes, the question is not whether we have become flawless. It is whether we will turn aside, listen, and answer.
